What the fabric is actually doing

A fishnet is not a fabric with holes punched in it. It is a knitted structure made of nothing but holes, held open by the strands at their edges. On the XS grid those strands sit close together, and almost everything you notice about these tights follows from that one fact.

Structure

Knitted, not woven

The nylon is looped rather than crossed, so the mesh stretches on both axes and pulls back. That is why one cut fits a long range of bodies, and also why a snagged strand runs instead of fraying: a knit is a single continuous thread, and a cut anywhere lets the loops unlock. Handle it like knitwear and it lasts; handle it like cloth and it does not.

The letter on the label refers to the hole, not the hip. XS is the smallest aperture offered in this style. Across the widest part of the calf it lays down roughly fifteen diamonds; the S grid in the same construction gives about six over the same distance.

Three times the cells means three times the strand length in the same area, which is where the depth of colour comes from. Nothing is denser about the yarn itself — there is simply more of it per inch of leg.

Density changes behaviour

Take the same pair into a low-lit room and the structure vanishes entirely. There is not enough light landing on individual strands to resolve them, so the leg flattens into a single dark tone. One garment, two completely different readings, decided by the lamp rather than the fabric.

How one size covers that range

A knitted net has an enormous working range because the cells themselves change shape under load. On a smaller frame the diamonds sit relaxed and nearly square; on a larger one they elongate and the net reads a little more open. Both are the garment behaving correctly.

Maintenance

Washing a knitted net

Cold water, mild detergent, by hand. The agitator in a machine is what catches and tears.
Press the water out between towels and hang. Heat kills the recovery in nylon.
Rings, watches and bracelets off before handling.
Draw them up the leg in stages rather than hauling on the waistband.
