A full-length frame is the honest way to show this. You can follow one leg from the top of the thigh, where the knit is working hardest, down past the knee to the ankle, and watch the diamonds close up as the leg narrows.

Mechanics

Three things happening as you pull them on

The loops open. Knitted yarn is a chain of loops. Under tension the loops elongate and the fabric grows without a single strand being stretched to its limit.
The diamonds widen. Each cell is a flexible quadrilateral. It deforms before the yarn does, which is why a net can take more than its own length in stretch.
Nylon returns. The fibre has strong elastic recovery, so the loops close again when the garment comes off rather than staying slack.
