In black the polished hardware stands out by contrast and becomes the detail you notice; in red the colour lands first and the rings fall in behind it. If you want a piece that registers the moment the clothes come off, this is the one of the two that does it. If you want something that disappears under pale trousers, the black works harder.

The construction is identical either way: three fine bands across each hip instead of a solid waistband, three polished metal O-rings joining them at the centre of the back, and a smooth seamless low-rise panel at the front. The stretch knit is soft, moves with you and lies flat without digging in anywhere, and the back coverage is a thong. Sizes are S to XL, with the guide listing each measurement in inches and centimetres.

Deep red brings a warning of its own: wash it separately the first time, because these dyes transfer onto whatever they are sitting with, and a shared machine downstairs makes that somebody else's laundry as well as yours. After that it is cold water, mild detergent, hands rather than a machine, and flat drying, with no bleach, no dryer and no iron.
