Everything on this one is organised around a single vertical: a ladder of open ovals that starts under the collarbone, runs three columns wide across the chest and closes to one at the hip. No sleeves, a wide scoop front and back, leg cut high. From any distance the eye follows that column instead of the width, which is why a piece this short reads as long.

01A shadow, not a block
The ground between the openings is a fine knit rather than a solid cloth. Against skin it reads as a dark tone with the body still legible underneath, which is what makes the ovals look cut out of something.
02The ovals change scale
Across the chest the ladder runs three wide and the openings are at their largest. By the waist it is down to one column and the shapes are narrow. That taper is knitted in, not seamed in.
03Two straps hold everything
With no sleeve, the shoulder straps are the only suspension the garment has. They are also the broadest pieces of close knit on it, around two fingers across at the top of the shoulder.

Face on, it looks like a vest with a pattern down the middle. Turn a quarter and the honeycomb strip along the ribs comes into view, and the proportion changes: from the side there is more open net than there is knit. Two angles, two readings, one piece.

The holes grow faster
than the yarn does

Stretching a knitted net does not thin the thread; it moves the strands apart. The amount of yarn stays fixed while the area it has to span goes up, so the proportion of open space rises with every inch the garment travels. That is the sizing mechanism and the coverage mechanism in one: the further a frame takes it, the more of the frame is on show.

It also means the flat photograph above understates how open the piece is once a body is inside it.
