The core is firmer, the silicone layer around it softer — that is what dual-density means.

Two ways a single-density piece this wide goes wrong: too soft and its own five pounds buckle the shaft; too firm and it stops being usable at all. 3.34″ leaves no middle ground, which is why the firmer core sits inside a giving outer layer rather than the whole thing being cast in one hardness.
